Banker of the Japanese Legacy in Lumajang
In 1943-1945, Japan conducted a large-scale mobilization in what was considered a strategic area to dispel Allied troops, mainly from the Australian territory adjacent to the Lumajang waters. In addition, Lumajang Regency is considered to be an important region because it has great potential for exploration of natural resources, human resources as well as being a strategic area for defense. A number of evidence that still exists today, ranging from airports and dozens or even hundreds of Bunkers that have been covered by sand and plants from the regions of Tempeh, Kunir, Pasirian to Tempursari.
Although there is only debris and a little left over from the building, this is a historical fact that Lumajang is an area that also had a bitter experience during the Japanese occupation. By deploying the ranks of semi-military youth who joined in seinendan and assisted by romusha, this project was carried out in early 1943. The workers not only came from the Lumajang area, but from a number of regions, such as Probolinggo, Malang, Pasuruan, Bondowoso to the Bojonegoro area . For about a month, seinendan and high school students from Malang, were required to attend kinrohosi (community service), and they were placed in two barracks. The barracks had bamboo poles, walled and thatched roofs.
The construction of an airport and a number of bunkers in the Pandawangi area claimed hundreds of lives. They were killed due to lack of supporting facilities for work, poor nutrition, inadequate barracks, hard pressure from the Japanese army, and weak psychological conditions. To eat only, they have to wait for hours, with a very simple food menu, such as corn rice and salted fish or even with cassava (dried cassava). As for drinking water needs, they must consume raw water from the local river. At night, they have to sleep without a mat or even a blanket, even though the wind is quite strong because they are in a beach area where the temperature is very cold.
The former romusha, both from youth and students, would not last long if they survived after returning from the Pandawangi project. On average they are prolonged, or crazy stress. But most of the others have died.
